Acknowledging Ryouga’s thanks, Kaito nodded back, calm and professional composure returning. “I suppose you two can handle yourselves from this point. Good bye, and… thanks.”
There was only a little more Kaito had to do with his wrecked body before he could rest. He hugged the corner of the dumpster and turned his head, seeing Orbital directing a crowd away from what would have appeared to be quite a ruckus. So he was doing something useful. Kaito climbed to his feet and hobbled towards a street light. He would have another long night typing and analysing his findings about Number 96.
Yuuma, who was all too happy to hear him say those words, nodded. Later on, he’d have to track Kaito down and thank him properly for everything he’d done to help. It was… unexpected. Kaito must not have hated him after all! That was a relief, but for now he’d need to focus on the near-impossible task of pulling himself to his feet.
And it was just as hard as Yuuma imagined it’d be. He hadn’t realized just how off-balance he was until he’d released his boyfriend. He refused to rely on Ryoga for this though. He’d done enough for him already.
“Did you park close?”
Ryoga too found it hard to stand, the fight had taken so much out of him. He was about to offer Yuuma a hand when he noticed the determination in the other’s eyes, the boy wanted to do this himself. He allowed the other to struggle to find his balance, saddened by how helpless he looked but pleased that finally, Yuuma was free.
“Very.”
He limped in the direction of his bike, pulling off his D-Gazer and deactivating his duel disk. A sharp stinging pain had grown in his right leg where the Mist’s tentacles had grabbed it.
“Just down here.”

Kaito retracted his Photon Hand, which quickly faded.
“Argh!” Stunned, time for Kaito froze for a moment before he attempted to climb into the dumpster. The chilly darkness latched like velcro onto his leg. “Yuma! Shark!” He realized Ryouga…
The direct contact made Yuuma flinch. It took him a moment to register that it was indeed Ryoga and not the Number—that these touches were safe. Leaning into the embrace, he closed his eyes and gave a relieved sigh. It didn’t matter that his boyfriend was covered in goop and sweat, didn’t matter that both he and Kaito had been forced to see him in this state. None of it was relevant at this point. Yuuma was tired, both physically and mentally. He didn’t want to talk about this. He didn’t want to think about it. All he wanted was to be back home in his bed, not worrying about that psychotic Number and with Ryoga right there.
His still-trembling arms found their way around Ryoga, squeezing him tightly. In that instant, he felt safe again.
He didn’t know how long they sat there in the aftermath of the destruction before Ryoga looked at Kaito and nodded, his way of thanking the other.
It felt like hours more before he spoke to Yuuma.
“C’mon, let’s get you home.”

The Mist screamed as Kaito’s photon hand attacked its very lifeforce. Its body bubbled, tentacles shaking as they broke into a million tiny pieces of liquid. Ryoga’s surge in power sent it reeling back further and it dropped Yuma, unable to keep its hold any longer.
“How are you - this is a lie!” it screamed as the multitude of attacks from Kaito and Ryoga continued splitting it apart. “You can’t defeat me, I am the strongest Numbers!” As Ryoga somehow sucked the absorbed Shark Drake out of it, it collapsed further.
“No - no I will not LOSE to you!” it shrieked, a last-ditch attack a pure liquid darkness latching onto the faces of all three of the teenagers around it. Its whole body was spent now, and its consciousness retreated back into a familiar form of the card it first came from, floating down on top of the rest of Yuma’s strewn-about deck. The liquid that encompassed it seemed to sink into the ground and various other crevasses the almost-living goop could find.
Kaito retracted his Photon Hand, which quickly faded.
“Argh!” Stunned, time for Kaito froze for a moment before he attempted to climb into the dumpster. The chilly darkness latched like velcro onto his leg. “Yuma! Shark!” He realized Ryouga and Yuuma were closer to the freshly-defeated Number. He attempted to throw his Duel Anchor haphazardly into the darkness, but seemed to catch nothing.
That… was disgusting. Yuuma pulled his arms up to his face and rubbed as hard as he could in an attempt to rid his skin of the foul liquid. He prayed that this would be the last time he would ever have to feel it on him again. There was an afterthought that told him it wouldn’t be that simple. Black Mist had pulled this trick before, why should now be any different? No. There was no way that thing survived. Kaito’s yell pulled him back from his thoughts. He’d almost forgotten they were here too.
“Sh-Shark?”
His vision was obscured by the black mess, he rubbed at his eyes for a good 30 sec before he could see through it. They had won. They had won. That wasn’t to say the Number wouldn’t come back but for now, they were safe.
Looking around for Yuuma he saw the small figure rubbing his face frantically. A small smile crossed his face as he began to walk towards the boy. His confused calling of Ryoga’s nickname told Ryoga he might be concussed or at least quite confused.
“I’m here.”
He sat down on the hard concrete beside his boyfriend and wrapped his arms around him, not caring about the black goop that clung to them. He’d almost forgotten Kaito was there.

He sat there dumbfounded as Yuusei told his story. He might know about the other’s future but his past in a gang surprised Ryoga a lot. The noble and smart and kind Yuusei Fudo had been a gang member? Wow.
He didn’t know who Yuusei was talking about but the guy obviously meant a lot to the other.
“You were in a gang? Shit…. I’m glad he came back.”
Finishing his burger he stood up, Yuusei wasn’t finished with his meal but if they were to solve his being here sitting in a restaurant wasn’t going to help.
Yuusei finished his burger and stood after Shark. “I grew up an orphan. And once I left Martha’s care, she was the woman that took care of some of my friends and I, we made our life on the streets. And gangs ruled. If you didn’t stick together you were done for. So me, Jack, Crow and Kiryu became Team Satisfaction. And we ruled Satellite for a while. Then… well, things got complicated.”
He waved a hand. “Maybe I should check out my won history while I’m here,” he joked weakly. “Just to see what’s still true and what’s been left out you know? I’m kind of curious. But right now there’s more important things.”
“Sounds a lot better than the gang I was involved with.”
He attempted to joke but it didn’t sound right coming from him; he suited being serious or angry more. He had known Yuusei had a hard life in the beginning but he hadn’t known it to be anything as hard as it was.
He walked to the counter and paid for both of them, doubting the other had the right currency on him. The girl at the counter was giving Yuusei an odd look, she probably knew of the older Dr Fudo, this young version just a strange look-a-like.
“Don’t wanna spoil your future for you. C’mon, let’s walk.”
He turned away from Yuusei and walked out the door of the shop into the cool night air.

Keep that skill in check? What fun would that be? Besides, there were very few he didn’t want to isolate himself from, one being Yuuma, the other was currently hospitalised.
The burger was greasy and warm and delicious, he savoured his first bite and subconsciously thanked Yuusei for suggesting food.
“Been trying but it’s not like I can just type it into a search engine and get the info.”
He took another bite, a piece of lettuce falling out of his burger and onto the plate.
“If you could call it that.”
Yuusei bit into his own burger and chewed thoughtfully for a moment. Sometimes he forgot that other people had childhoods. Normal ones. That they had actually gone to school and not learned how to live by surviving on the streets. “Yeah it’s kind of a drag.”
He took another bite and turned Shark’s works over carefully. It was probably a touchy subject, given that answer. One he wasn’t going to press if it would spark a bad reaction from him. After all, he’d need to stay on good terms (not that he’d want to piss him off even if he wasn’t involved).
“You said you’re dating Yuma? What’s he like?”
He didn’t really want to discuss Yuuma, the recent events with Black Mist still fresh in his mind, the sadness at how violated and abused Yuuma had been was probably visable on his face.
“He’s cool, energetic and stuff, determined.”
There was a bit of silence as he continued to eat his burger and knocked back the glass of coke. Discussing himself wasn’t really something he wanted to do, he attempted to turn the conversation to Yuusei. Sooner or later they’d have to figure out why the other had come to this time and how it was related to the NUmbers but for now? Fuck that, they were eating.
“What about yourself, tell me something I’m not likely to know about.”
Yuusei didn’t know the reason why, but it was clear that Shark wanted to keep some of these things private. Maybe something was going on. He understood that feeling well, and he wasn’t going to press unless he felt he had to. Everything he’d learned in Satellite told him that was someone closed up, there was a danger is trying to pry them open.
“Me? Well…”
He shrugged a bit and then bit into a fry.
“I was in a gang when I was 15 and stayed there for a little over a year. Watched my first boyfriend thrown in jail. Later had his clothes thrown at me after he killed himself. I built two D-Wheels on my own with nothing but scraps. My friends and I battled a bunch of androids and saved the city, which was when I learned some guy was so obsessed with me he physically altered his entire appearance to look like me.”
He shrugged again and swirled a fry around in some ketchup.
“Then I watched the person I loved most in the world betray me, then come to his senses and die. And I killed him.” A bitter smile curled his lips and he bit down on the soaked fry. “Recently he came back to me, though. I have no idea if you would know who he was.”
He sat there dumbfounded as Yuusei told his story. He might know about the other’s future but his past in a gang surprised Ryoga a lot. The noble and smart and kind Yuusei Fudo had been a gang member? Wow.

Black Mist slowly advanced, dodging attacks and throwing away various monsters until he was right in front of Ryoga. Its arms wrapped around Yuma as it held him tauntingly a few feet from Ryoga.
“You want this to stop, Yuma? Why don’t you tell Shark you’re broken up with him and mine now. You don’t have a reason to care anymore, boy.” It was making the likely costly error of assuming it had knocked Kaito out with that last attack, choosing to taunt and focus on Shark and his monsters fully.
Drowsy and disoriented, Kaito pushed himself off the dumpster and struggled to maintain proper form. His vision was blurred and he tasted iron in his mouth, but that didn’t matter. Now the Number was focused on Ryouga, perhaps he could perform the finishing blow.
Like an eagle, Kaito dashed as quietly as he could, trying to avoid the Numbers line of sight, before thrusting his Photon Hand into it.
Yuuma looked everywhere but at Ryoga before casting his gaze to the side. Maybe Ninety-Six was right. Maybe there was no reason for him to care. Those words though… I’m not with you… he couldn’t bring himself to say them. He didn’t want to be anywhere but with Ryoga.
“I’m not saying that.” Yuuma spat, venom caking his tone as he directed the words to the monster behind him, “I already told you that we’re not dating. Not now. Not ever.”
“Yuuma! Don’t listen to it!”
He kept battering the Number with attacks, energy beginning to fade, as with when he’d controlled Number 32 by himself, this was incredibly taxing.
Out of the corner of his eye he could see Kaito preparing to use his Photon Hand, good, he wasn’t out of the game yet.
As Yuuma said those words he felt a new surge of power come through him, yes, this is what he was fighting for. A bright light flashed, he wasn’t sure whether it was from Kaito or from himself but when he could see again, Number 32 was in front of him and Kaito’s Photon Hand was inside the Number.

The Mist turned from gleeful to angry, throwing Yuma around like a rag doll, confident that Shark would stop his attacks if Yuma got in the way. The attacks that did make it through sloughed off parts of its soupy body, but it ignored them.
“You think he doesn’t want you to rescue him? Ha! He doesn’t need rescuing!” it talked like Yuma wasn’t even there, wasn’t allowed a say in what happened to him. It suddenly threw a card at Ryoga, and it glowed to turn into a spiraling gust of wind. But it didn’t do the card effect, it just threw Ryoga into the air instead. The tentacles lashing around Kaito formed a lattice, trying to crush him against the wall of the alleyway.
To Kaito, this was about revenge on Black Mist. Now Ryouga was sending a barrage of attacks, Kaito swept forward, ignoring the dull ache spawning in his body. Unlike his usual routine, he extended his luminous Photon Hand towards the Number itself, attempting to make contact.
Then, Kaito was slapped by the air into a dumpster. “Damn!”
The fluid movements he was forced along with left Yuuma feeling sick. Everything about this was wrong and seeing the Mist hurting not only his boyfriend, but Kaito as well was just too much. In times like these it was Astral he turned to for aid. Astral. He wasn’t here. Not this time. Not the last time either. Everything was on his shoulders now. Getting through to Kaito and Shark was an impossible feat. Ninety-Six on the other hand… easily angered, yes, but he could work with that.
“Stop it!” This time his shout was directed to the Number itself, hoping to take its attention away from the others, “…Please!”
The gust of wind shocked him as went flying backwards, his tail bone landing heavily on the ground as he fell. He still couldn’t see anything but red, struggling back to his feet he drew a new card, just what he needed. Flip summoning Shocktopus he was able to use his second Shark Stickers to the field. He then tributed Shark Stickers to summon Jawsman whose attack was at 3200 due to the 2 other water monsters on his field.
“You fucking bastard!”
He sent attack after attack again, directly at Black Mist, trying to avoid Yuuma as much as he could.
“I wont stop until you’re safe Yuuma!”

rced its alternate form into another dimension. “How dare you! I’ll kill you! You’re dead!” it screamed wildly as tentacles lashed out like whips, attempting to strike Kaito. Its hold on Shark was weakened by the attack and loss of part of itself, and in the haze it was incredibly imprecise. Yuma’s shout brought its attention back to its captive.
“Didn’t you hear, Shark? Yuma wants you to leave! He’s my obedient little toy, after all,” it dragged Yuma close to it, holding him up like both a prize and a human shield.
The tentacles approaching Kaito were fuelled with rage this time around. He became a dancer, evading and taking cold lashes all over his body as he waited for an opening. If there was a gap, he could perhaps tamper with the Number without injuring Yuuma’s soul.
In desperation, Kaito shouted, “Yuuma! Let us rescue you! I don’t want to owe you anything.”
At those words, Yuuma turned his face away. He couldn’t bear to look at them and there was no answer to give to that. This wouldn’t end well. Someone was going to end up hurt or possibly worse, and he would rather it be him.
“You don’t owe me anything!” He rebutted with a shaking, almost pleading voice “Just get out!”
The words from Black Mist hurt. There was no fucking way Yuuma was his. The exchange between Kaito and Yuuma broke his heart he couldn’t stand hearing the boy trying to sacrifice himself. Yuuma needed to be protected and looked after.
“Shut your mouth Yuuma, there’s no fucking way either of us are leaving you!”
He desperately looked through what he had in his hand… nothing. He felt useless. He wanted to run to Yuuma and shake him into reality, get rid of the haze the Mist had put over his mind. He sent attack after attack at the Number, trying to dislodge it’s hold on his boyfriend. Every attach filled with rage and hatred.

Kaito wasted no time. He released his Tokens, and entering the field in a blaze of light was Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon.
Seeing Yuuma, his emotional state manifesting a pale aura over him, reminded Kaito of his duel with III and IV. “Yuuma! Wake up! We’re here! Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon! Attack Black Mist!”
Yuuma had struggled the while, trying to understand exactly what was happening in front of him. It couldn’t be real and, if it was, then he needed to do something. Fast. Move. Move! That monster could do whatever it wanted to him, but not to anyone else. He didn’t want anyone suffering because of him. But wait… what if this was just some trick created by the Number? What if it was testing him? This was one of the few times in his life where he felt genuinely scared. No. Not scared. He was terrified.
And then he heard it—that familiar voice. Kaito. There was no mistaking it. No tricks. No schemes. It was a struggle to find his voice, but it came out strong when he did. “Get out of here!”
He struggled against the tentacle on his leg but it was useless, the hole was too strong. How the fuck had he let himself fall into being trapped again. Then he heard it. Yuuma was awake, alive despite all he’d been through. The shout that came from the boy caused Ryoga to temporarily lose focus on the fight. He tried to shout something caring back but all that came out was…
“Not a fucking chance!”
He watched the stream of bright light that came out of Galaxy Eyes hit Black Mist, removing the monster from play temporarily and freeing his leg from the tentacles. He had to take this chance.
He sent forth another attack with Black Ray Lancer.
